Chairman Raser-Schramm calls on DE GOP to end support for President Trump after Charlottesville comments
Press ReleaseDelaware Democratic Party Chairman Erik Raser-Schramm issued the following statement following President Trump’s Tuesday afternoon comments regarding this weekend’s deadly events in Charlottesville, Va.:
Yesterday, Democrats and Republicans came together to put patriotism over party and make it clear that the racism, hate and reprehensible violence they propagate would not be tolerated in our state or on our watches.
Today, the President of the United States – a person who above all else must serve as the moral compass of our great nation – had the audacity to equate counter-protesters with the armed hate groups openly threatening the lives of black Americans, Jewish Americans, LGBTQ Americans and anyone else who looks and loves differently from them.
Today, the President of the United States sent an unmistakable signal to the most radical elements of the white supremacy movement that they should feel emboldened – and that the rest of America should be more tolerant of their views.
Today, the President of the United States showed, in the starkest of terms, why he is unfit to lead our great nation. There can be no more parsing of his words, no more question of his intent. What Republicans and Democrats alike condemned just yesterday, President Trump defended today.
Tonight, it is my hope that Republicans who rose to the occasion yesterday will do so again by clearly and unequivocally calling for the resignation of President Trump. Anyone who would defend the actions and beliefs of white supremacists is unfit to lead the United States of America. Now is the time for the Party of Lincoln to join us in that realization.
