Thursday, October 5, 2006

(Delaware Democratic Party)

Lt. Governor John Carney announced the launch of a major public health campaign geared towards “Ending Cervical Cancer in Our Lifetime” on Thursday, October 5, 2006. Joined by members of the medical community, the Lt. Governor officially kicked off the start of this initiative in Delaware, one of ten states in the nation to pilot the program.

Said Lt. Governor Carney, “This is one of those rare instances when we can eliminate a terrible disease. We know that this disease is preventable. We need to make sure every woman knows that.”

The campaign is geared towards educating women on the direct connection between the human papillomavirus (HPV) and cervical cancer, and sharing that 99.7% of all cases of cervical cancer are caused by HPV. As part of the effort to end cervical cancer, brochures are available that detail prevention, screening and treatment options to help women avoid HPV and cervical cancer.

Lt. Governor Carney currently serves on the Delaware Cancer Consortium and chairs the Delaware Health Care Commission.
